What is the Matrix?

During new employee orientation at Mary Kay, we were given tours of the manufacturing facility and the warehouse (ASRS). Everybody told me that the ASRS tour would be the coolest. Given all the hype about it, I was ready to be disappointed since it raised my expectations. Now that I have been to ASRS, I will agree that it is the coolest part of the tour.

The Automated Storage and Retrieval System (ASRS - get it?) was built back in 1985. Just being there feels like something out of Star Wars or The Matrix. The storage area is about the size of a football field and 82 feet high -- The Matrix. The motorized robots move pallets of goods to and from the loading dock -- Star Wars. The lack of human intervention in combination with the hydraulic sound of the warehouse lifts and the beeping sound of the robots brings a cool, yet cold and erie environment.

This is a snapshot of the storage area... the red pole in the center of the picture moves forward/backward and up/down to place and store items on the racks.

If there were laser weapons involved, then it would feel like something out of Terminator...
